Outpatient treatment is group therapy, with occasional one-on-one counseling added in. Group work is the main “treatment” when it comes to addiction treatment. Even in all-inclusive rehabs or luxury residential rehabs the actual treatment patients receive is group therapy with occasional one-on-one counseling with a variation on who conducts the group/individual therapy; providers range from basic behavioral techs to master-level counselors all the way up to a doctoral level Ph.D. or PsyD which is very rare. Some outpatient programs will offer other therapies like neurofeedback, art, yoga, etc. but these are all based around hours of group therapy each day. The two main outpatient treatment programs are:
- PHP – Partial Hospitalization Program (4-6hrs/day for 4-5 days/week for 2-4 months)
- IOP – Intensive Outpatient Program (3-4hrs/day for 3-4 days/week for 2-4 months)
Outpatient treatment should be observed while in a safe living environment or sober living, and it is also suggested to attend anonymous meetings. Outpatient treatment is far less expensive than rehab, and most people can go to work or school while attending IOP. Without insurance, outpatient programs are typical $1,000/week but most programs will work with insurance.
